Sterling is excited to announce that Oran Kiazim, Vice President of Global Privacy will be a speaker at the IAPP Global Privacy Summer at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. on April 20th. The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Global Privacy Summit is the world’s biggest privacy conference where attendees from around the globe come together for “in-depth discussions, gold-standard educations and make valuable connections.” Attendees will learn information on the latest privacy trends such as the data security, GDPR changes, privacy operations management, the business of privacy, cloud computing and much more. There are seminars and masterclasses lead by global privacy experts, keynote speakers, networking opportunities and an industry tradeshow as well as one day devoted to practical, hands-on seminars and operational strategy.

Oran Kiazim and Terry McQuay of Nymity are teaming up to present, An Alternative Approach to PIAs on Thursday, April 20th at 9:30 am in Salon 1 on Level M2. The presentation will explore an alternative approach to achieving the objectives of privacy impact assessments (PIAs) while avoiding all of the traditional challenges. The approach, motivated by the new General Data Protection Regulation GDPR) allows organisations to demonstrate the meeting of compliance obligations of Article 30 (Records and Processing Activities) as well as Article 35 (Data protection impact assessment), while focusing on minimizing the risk to data subjects and the organization (also the objective of a PIA).

About the GDPR

The EU General Data Protection Regulation replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EDC and is designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizen data privacy and to reshape the way organisations across the region approach data privacy. The GDPR was approved by the EU parliament on 14 April 2016 and will apply from 25 May 2018. The key principles of data privacy remain from the 1995 directive, but there are many changes proposed to the regulatory privacy policies. A few of the key changes included in the GDPR are:

  • Increased Territorial Scope
  • Breach Notification
  • Right to Be Forgotten
  • Data Portability
  • Privacy by Design

The GDPR updates will have a definite effect on the background screening industry. The changes could bring additional risks to a company. To help determine or eliminate the risks, data protection impact assessment (DPIA) or privacy impact assessment (PIA) can be used, allowing privacy risks to be identified, understood and wherever possible mitigated before harm can be caused to an individual’s personal information. We will have more information about these changes as we approach the rollout date in May 2018.
